Rise and Resists

Every Thursday at 12:00 PM, Rise and Resist gathers in front of 26 Federal Plaza, the site where ICE arrests and detains migrants, for a one-hour silent protest against raids and deportations. This is a nonviolent direct action group committed to opposing, disrupting, and defeating any government act that threatens democracy, equality, and civil liberties. Born with Trump 1.0, the movement endured under Biden since deportations never stopped, and today it continues with even more strength in Trump 2.0. In silence, participants hold signs denouncing cruelty and photos of people who have been disappeared or killed by ICE. That silence carries grief and resistance, a refusal to let these crimes go unnoticed.

A lineup of protesters hold signs reading: “No one should live in fear,” “FASCIST,” “America was built by Immigrants,” and “The only minority destroying the US is fascist oligarchs.”

A person in a flat cap kneels on the sidewalk, bowing their head over a large photograph of a woman and child surrounded by law enforcement.

As activist Julie DeLaurier said: “We will not close our curtains while they drag our neighbors away. White supremacy is in its death rattle, and we will resist until justice prevails.”

Two women hold signs at a protest: one reads "DEMOCRACIES don’t do this" accompanied by photos of mass detentions, and the other reads "If JESUS were in the USA today TRUMP WOULD DEPORT HIM" with a portrait of Donald Trump.

Protesters hold a banner that says "...ENTIONS NO MORE" while a person in the foreground wears a shirt that reads "RISE AND RESIST."

Protester holds a sign that reads "ABOLISH ICE NOW" in purple lettering while others in the background display photographs of immigration enforcement actions.

Protesters line the edge of the pavement in a wide shot outside the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building. Holding high-contrast black and yellow signs that read "ICE is TRUMP’S GESTAPO" and "I.C.E.’S CRUELTY is the point," they stand as pedestrians and commuters walk past, forced to witness the demonstration in the middle of the city's midday rush.

Julie holds three signs: one stating "JESUS SAID CARE FOR STRANGERS," another memorializing "SUICIDE in ICE custody Brayan Rayo-Garzon," and a third declaring "Migrants aren’t robbing you. Billionaires are."

In the foreground, one individual holds a cardboard sign that reads "NO ICE NO DEPORTATION WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS" while another person to their right holds a large photograph of an immigration enforcement scene in a field. Within that displayed photo, a person is shown holding a sign that says "ICE OUT."

A woman in a sun hat holds a large, black-and-white poster featuring a portrait of a man with the caption "KIDNAPPED by I.C.E. Jerce Reyes Barrios." Her face is partially obscured by the sign, placing the focus entirely on the victim’s identity and the charge of "kidnapping."

Demonstrators line a city sidewalk holding signs that read "ICE is TRUMP'S GESTAPO" and "I.C.E.'s CRUELTY is the point."

Activists hold signs reading: "ICE: DO YOUR JOB: SEIZE FENTANYL BUST SEX TRAFFICKERS LEAVE OUR NEIGHBORS ALONE!!", "TRUMP and STEPHEN MILLER ARE KIDNAPPERS FREE KILMAR ABREGO GARCIA", and "ABOLISH I.C.E."

Three signs are held in a row, creating a theological and humanitarian plea. The central sign shows a young man’s face under the heading "SUICIDE in ICE custody: Brayan Rayo-Garzón." To the left, a bright yellow sign quotes the Parable of the Good Samaritan: "JESUS SAID CARE FOR STRANGERS," while the sign to the right reminds onlookers that "Billionaires" are the ones robbing the country, not migrants.

Advocates display signs reading "I.C.E.'s CRUELTY is the point" and "ICE is TRUMP'S GESTAPO," while others sit in the background holding memorials for Kilmar Abrego Garcia and Serawit Gebrebgziabher.

Individuals hold signs memorializing Marie Ange Blaise, who "DIED in ICE CAMP," while another sign compares historical events with the text "NAZIS 1943."

Against the dark, glass facade of the federal building, one woman holds a sign labeling the administration as "FASCIST" with a portrait of Trump. Below her, another participant sits on the ground holding a large photograph of a child being detained by officers in tactical gear, bringing the reality of field operations to the doorstep of the administrative headquarters.

Participants display a variety of signs in front of a federal building, including one made from a pizza box that reads "THIS SIGN PROTECTED BY FIRST AMENDMENT!" and another yellow sign partially visible that mentions Trump and deportation.

Attendees hold various signs along the sidewalk, including a prominent memorial for Marie Ange Blaise who "DIED in ICE CAMP" and a yellow sign reading "ICE is TRUMP’S GESTAPO."

Two women stand together holding signs that address the erosion of democratic values. One sign features a grid of photos showing mass detentions with the text "DEMOCRACIES don’t do this." The other, on a bright yellow background, delivers a sharp political critique: "If JESUS were in the USA today TRUMP WOULD DEPORT HIM."

A group displays a "DISAPPEARING NEIGHBORS" banner and memorials for Brayan Rayo-Garzon outside the federal building.

A protestor wearing a red cap and holding a large, grainy photograph of a detainer holding a man in handcuffs stands in the center of the sidewalk. To the left, a sign reads "Migrants aren't robbing you, Billionaires are." Other demonstrators hold signs against a federal building in the background.

From behind a protester wearing a dark t-shirt with "RISE AND RESIST" printed in bold white letters, the view opens to other members of the group holding placards depicting scenes of ICE arrests. This perspective emphasizes the collective nature of the movement—a human wall of documentation and dissent facing the building where these policies are enacted.
